My oven is by Kenmore and the problem is that I can't get it to go off when I press the off button and so therefore, I have to unplug the whole thing to turn it off. So when I plug it in the broiler comes on but not bottom of the oven. I need it repaired!

Before you attempt any dryer repairs, make sure that the appliance has been disconnected from the power source. Most common dryer repair problems involve a dryer that refuses to turn on, lack of heat, lack of tumbling, slow drying, over heating, too much noise etc. There are some basic dryer repair steps you can take to get your dryer working before a professional repair service shows up. In case of a dryer that refuses to turn on at all, first determine if there is enough power. See if the dryer is plugged in properly, and if it is, check if the fuse has blown or a circuit breaker has tripped. Another reason could be a defective door switch. You can find the switch near the door frame. Try getting the switch to work by opening the front or top of the dryer, and if this doesn't work, get the switch replaced. If there is a lack of heat in the dryer, check if the fuse or circuit breaker has blown. If you have a gas dryer, basic gas dryer repairs will involve checking to see if the gas supply is turned on. Check both the gas valve located behind the dryer, as well as the main gas connection. If your gas dryer has an electronic ignition, you may have an ignition problem that must be fixed by a gas dryer repair man. If you have an older dryer, check to see if the pilot light is burning, and light it again, if it is not.
If your dryer doesn't tumble or makes a lot of noise, check the interior of the drum to see if there are any objects that have become loose. A noisy dryer can also be caused by a worn out drum belt or motor bearings, a defective support roller or a faulty idler pulley. If the dryer continues to run, but there is no tumbling, there may be a fault with the belt, motor or switch. Call a dryer repair service immediately. If you can smell natural gas close to the dryer, don't turn on any electrical switches or light matches. Shut off the gas valve, and open all doors and windows to let the smell of gas out. Turn off the main gas supply connection, and then call your gas supplier from outside the house. If your drier takes long to dry, then it could be a blockage of the dryer vent. Clean the lint trap, and make sure that the dryer isn't located too close to the valve. The air duct should have enough space, and there should be no blockages in its path.
Washing machine repairs are a little easier to undertake, because it has a simple functioning. If your washer doesn't run, then simple washer repairs will involve checking to see if the machine is receiving enough power. If the machine stops midway, but continues to hum, then there may be a trip in the overload protector. Take out some pieces of clothing from the machine, and then restart. Make sure that the power receptacle is functioning properly, and that the washer lid is completely shut. You may even have to replace the cord if the main power receptacle seems to be functioning properly. If none of these work, then it could be a problem with the controls.
